Eruptions and Other Patterns by William Morse:

What is the sound of a tree falling in the forest? The death throes of the tree, perhaps, followed by an explosion of new life in its shadow.

Evolution is the response to the new conditions created by an endless, essentially infinite number of chance occurrences. Changing climate patterns, volcanic eruptions, erosion uncovering new soils, or perhaps just (JUST!) the arrival of a new predator or food source. (Or a tree falls).

Life evolves in recognizable patterns, and we have evolved (by natural selection!) to notice, analyze, be surprised by and appreciate them.
