Dennis Stein

Dennis Stein was born in Connecticut in 1953. He studied psychology and mental health in college, and worked in various aspects of the mental health field for a number of years. He became interested in photography and participated in a number of workshops in the 1980’s, where he bought a couple of Banner toy cameras for $ 8.00 each. Little did he know that these would lead him into a career of fine art photography. He keeps images simple, giving everyday and mundane subject matter visual strength. Presently he uses toy cameras, pinhole cameras, vintage film cameras (his favorite being a 1937 Zeiss Ikoflex TLR), and Polaroids. Each type of camera often results in unpredictable and serendipitous images. In his most recent work, he digitally applies alternative processes to scanned negatives.
