My work usually has a figurative beginning – even when it appears abstract. It’s mostly about a specific place and often begun drawing directly out of doors. I start as quickly as possible, draw with ink and choose unusual angles. I’m looking for shifting terrain, effects of erosion and the verticality of trees. Later in the studio, composing involves formal and conceptual aspects. Sometimes it’s contrasting deep space with shallow space and sometimes sequencing the shapes into a linear progression. It’s often about present and past moments that intertwine.
