Boston-based photographer Liz Albert approaches other peoples’ family photographs with a directorial eye. She creates narrative pairs from a disparate collection of mid-century color slides purchased online. Albert unites the images with uniform cropping and vignetting and her choice of sophisticated, cohesive color palettes. Inspired by the thrillers of the same era, Albert constructs an allusive narrative across the series whose recurring motif is travel. Like Janet Leigh’s character in the opening minutes of Psycho, Albert’s characters are depicted in mid-escape from their lives. While the individual pictures that compose them are innocuous, her images are full of startling juxtapositions that provoke sadness, uncertainty, shock, and laughter.
